What do we recycle?

It is the first plant in the world that recycles banana plastic waste, with which Costa Rica is at the forefront of environmental protection in areas dedicated to banana agriculture. In Recyplast, there are about 100 employees counting administrative and operational personnel.

Currently, it recycles approximately 14,000 tons of plastic waste per year, being an example in the world, with which 7,000 tons of cornerboards are obtained annually.

We recycle high density polyethylene, low density polyethylene and polypropylene, which comes from industry, commerce, agroindustry and communities. We received material from

  • The companies: Dole, Del Monte, Grupo Montecristo and some banana independent producers.
  • The plastic used for melon and pineapple sowing.
  • Collection organizations run mostly by women and Municipalities

In our plant of 2,500 square meters located in Siquirres, you have the equipment to wash, densify and extrude the material, which is clean and ready to manufacture the cornerboards corners. Besides, we have a water treatment system that allows the reuse of this fundamental resource. This treatment system  reaffirms our commitment to the environment

Education and community

Recyplast collaborates with educational institutions, schools, high schools and universities, to which forums are given on topics such as recycling or waste separation.

Recycling Center

  • 16% of the recycled plastic in Recyplast comes from 22 Colection Centers (CAs), equivalent to 2000 metric tons per year
  • The Colection Centers are featured by:

– Being microenterprises (2-10 workers)

– Being managed by female heads of household

– Being located in low income rural zones

  •  We firmly believe that the problem of plastic pollution in Costa Rica could be reduced through the promotion and strengthening of CAs throughout the national territory
